The Editor’s Experience at Open Source Systems LTDWith skepticism I entered an office located in a magnificent setting on a private lake in Nyari Estate, Nairobi and was invited to meet the other students in my group. On a deck facing a small section of very private Acacia forest teaming with birdlife my life was totally changed by a group of dedicated engineers working on that most precious of possessions we each carry between our ears – our brain! To say that the setting is unique is an understatement but what happened next and for the following 4 weeks was totally mind-blowing. We started with Speed Reading. This is what had caught my attention in the first place. Promises that my reading speed would be doubled in the first class were borne out in full to my utter amazement. First session testing showed that my starting reading speed was 150 words per minute. Further careful assessment showed that I had developed several very easily corrected bad habits. Among them regression, back skipping and sub-vocalization were pointed out to me and it was explained that these habits held me back and came from my past when I had been told to read by sounding out words – entirely appropriate technique for a school-going youngster but not appropriate for a university graduate like myself. Then to my complete and total amazement, a few minutes later, after some exercises and learning of some new reading methods I was re-tested at 700 words per minute! I kid you not – this is exactly what happened! Completely hooked I was eager to come back for more. In subsequent classes more techniques were taught including such things as meta-guiding, pacing and peripheral vision enhancement. But the most amazing of all was the revelation that traditional school training has all but shriveled our right brains – the half responsible for colour, rhythm, spatial awareness, imagination, daydreaming and dimension – to the extent that we are effectively using only half of that amazing computer we all carry in our heads. To address these issues these Knowledge Engineering people have come up with a system that is a complete rebuild of something you might have heard of that is taking the world by storm even as you read this – Mind Mapping. By adding multiple dimensions to this including their very special CAKE® (Computer Aided Knowledge Engineering) and KREST® (Knowledge Re-engineering Study Technique) they have come up with KMap® which is a souped up version of Mind Maps. Over the period of the course I learned to KMap and with that came an increase in reading speed to over 5,000 words per minute. But it wasn’t over yet – not by a long shot! We went on to Memory Training and again new techniques, skills and products were brought to light including link systems, peg systems, phonetics, M3® and more. Putting it all together I achieved 5,000 words per minute and, get this folks, 100% recall of what I had read – yes that’s right – if I choose to I can now read an entire book at speeds I could never have dreamed of before the course and then get 100% recall of every word, idea, picture and train of thought in the book AND retain those concepts for the rest of my life. I’ve done it and proved it to myself and others – a 300 page text book in under an hour complete with total recall! So, how long did it take you to read the 4 paragraphs above? If it took you two minutes you are reading at just over 280 words per minute or what the typical adult can achieve. Take this course, I urge you, you would then be able to read this text in about 15 seconds but more importantly, you would have total recall of information contained herein. How would this impact your life? I don’t know about you but I am still finding new and amazing applications each and every day that I live and what a life – these guys made each day look so much brighter, the sky so much bluer and the world – my oyster. "Work requires that I read 5-6 journals per week, 4 newspapers each day, Newsweek and Time magazines just to stay abreast of the competition. It used to take me all week to get through this mountain of reading. Now it takes just ˝ an hour each morning!"
