KETexts® - Knowledge Engineered Texts

KETexts® are texts such as entire books or school curricula that we have put through our system using our own staff and resources and come up with a fully knowledge engineered version of the text. Text is boring and blurs into a continuous grey blur that is hard to read and almost impossible to recall with any, even low level, of efficiency. After we have dealt with the text we are working on it is re-engineered into KMaps® complete with the training to go with them if so desired. This leads to a new way of looking at the text-based information and leads to the ability to read in minutes what would have taken hours or weeks before we had a go at it and which would have been nearly impossible to remember with even 10% recall. After using our KMaps most students/staff can recall the material with nearly 100% recall.

We are working on KETexts in two modes:

  1. Solicited
  2. Unsolicited

Solicited

These are texts that people bring to us to have knowledge engineered through our system. For example, a school recently brought us an entire 'O' Level History course to have us re-engineer for them. We worked very closely with the History teachers from the school and produced 42 KMaps® via our CAKE® system and 5 hours of instruction to run the course via the KMaps and KREST®. The school then sent us their students to go through our Cognitive Skills courses and once they had done this the teachers who had built the KEText system with us were able to teach their classes using this new system. Comparative results are as follows:

  BEFORE KETexts AFTER KETexts

Number of Pages of notes: 763 A4 size 12 point text book pages total 42 KMaps each on one A4 sheet of paper
Course Duration 3 Terms, 2 X double class periods per week 3 Terms, 2 X double class periods per week but typical class 15minutes of explaining KMap and rest of time spent in open discussion in class not heard of before the course
Grade 53% passed at year end exams, 9 outright failures 100% passed, 87 with distinction, no failures

Unsolicited

We are currently working on several texts that we have not been approached to by a client to put through the KETexts system. We are doing this to create KETexts® that we intend to sell side-by-side with the original book and to provide the training to enable students to study the book in question in a much shorter time frame (typically 8-10% of the time) and to achieve near 100% recall of ALL the pertinent points. Texts we are currently working on include:

  1. The Scramble for Africa by Thomas Packenham
  2. A Textbook of Internal Medicine by Kumar and Clerk
  3. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
  4. A Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa by Stevenson and Fanshawe
  5. An Introduction to Object Oriented Analysis by  Brown
  6. Python, How to Program by Deitel
  7. Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel
  8. Advanced Java 2 Platform by Deitel and Deitel

We have selected these books to develop a cross-section of KETexts to show what our system is capable of and also to prototype our system so that it can be later adapted to texts that our clients may want put through the system.

Charges

Our charges for creating a system such as this are based on

  1. Amount of material to be knowledge engineered
  2. Level of detail desired and therefore level of recall achievable - it is possible to engineer the material you provide to enable TOTAL RECALL of every word on every page of the material if this is what you desire.
  3. Length of time we will spend doing this
  4. Number of staff involved
  5. Number of KMaps produced

A rough indication is that a work like "The Scramble for Africa" by Packenham took us 6 weeks to complete with 2 members of staff devoted full time to this task. They produced 37 KMaps and delivered 4 hours training on how to use this work. We charged US$ 950 for the entire thing - a very low price as we retained copyright in the KMaps that we produced for this. Should you want to own the materials this can be negotiated with us albeit at a higher price as you can then go out and deliver the materials as a course you provide and produce copies of all the work done. The student scored a top mark - A grade.
